Mythbusters Season 3 – Episode 33: Killer Brace Position

The MythBusters, Jamie and Adam, two special effects experts with over 30 years experience between them, set out to methodically bust three urban legends in each episode. They will apply modern day science with age-old legends and modern-day myths to prove or disprove what is real and what is truly urban legend. They don’t just tell the myths, they’ll put them to the test. Episode 33: KILLER BRACE POSITION: Myth has it that when your plane’s going down and the flight attendant tells you to assume the brace position, it’s not to save you…it’s to kill you! Allegedly the brace position’s true intention is to break your neck that’s because supposedly it’s cheaper for the airlines to pay out a wrongful death suit than for countless years of rehabilitation. To get to the bottom of this conspiracy theory the Mythbusters strap themselves into their own homemade mock airplane and go for a little ride straight down! CELL PHONE DRIVING VS. DRUNK DRIVING: Everyone knows that talking on a cell phone while driving is potentially dangerous, but is it as dangerous as that other driving no-no driving drunk? To find out, Adam and Kari head to a local raceway to try their hand driving a skills course first while being distracted on the cell phone, and then after knocking back a couple of rounds of beers. The results? Well, let’s just say they may surprise you.
